The secret underground bunker

Underneath a park in Gravesend there is a bunker. It had been there for decades with many myths springing up about its purpose. Ricky, one of our residents, had expressed an interest in visiting the bunker if the opportunity arose. So, when it did, a trip was arranged. Ricky’s mum asked if she could also attend, and on Friday evening a small group including two of our European volunteers entered the bunker.
What we discovered was an emergency communications centre that could be used in the event of a disaster. It was fully fitted to accommodate a number of emergency staff who would co-ordinate emergency services from there. As for the myth of it being a nuclear bunker, the chance of survival even underground was shown to be nil. In fact, the biggest learning curve was to discover that where we live would be one of the prime targets for a nuclear attack.
